Angel (1887), Abbott Handerson Thayer
Both a portrait and an allegory, Angel depicts Thayer's eleven-year-old daughter Mary, the leitmotif of his most important work, defining art as "a no-man's land of immortal beauty where every step leads to God". This was the first in a gallery of chaste, lovely young women, usually winged as the personification of virginal, spiritual beauty. Rendered with extraordinary tenderness, it stands as one of the defining images of American Gilded Age idealism.
Currently on public display in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.
Format & Paper: Available as a museum-quality Giclée print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a heavyweight, acid-free cotton paper that captures the luminous warmth and delicate sfumato of Thayer's ethereal brushwork.
Size: 70 × 100 cm
