FRIENDLY SPIRITS
It is common in many cultures to believe in friendly creatures that protect us. Born from two very different imaginations (one Swiss, one Tewa) here we bring two small spirits to keep you company.
Kleiner Gartengeist (Small Garden Ghost), Paul Klee (1929).
Made of watercolour shapes that overlap like coloured glass, painted after his trip to Egypt. Private collection.
Avanyu, Julian Martinez (c. 1923).
Avanyu, the horned water serpent — guardian of rivers and rain in Tewa tradition and protector of the Pueblo people. Julian Martinez painted Avanyu again and again, on paper and on the black pottery he made with his wife and famous potter Maria Martinez. Part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.
Format & Paper: Each print is produced as a museum-quality Giclée print on Hahnemühle German Etching, a warm, textured cotton paper that honours the depth and tonal richness of each work.
Size: Paul Klee — Kleiner Gartengeist · 59 × 84 cm · Julian Martinez — Avanyu· 50 × 50 cm
