MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
A wise owl stares out as if it has been waiting for you. A field of yellow pieces comes across as a game. Playful and precise, these pieces are made to be looked at slowly.
Zeichen in Gelb (Signs in Yellow), Paul Klee (1937).
Towards the end of his life, Klee used colour palettes ranging from nearly monochromatic to highly polychromatic. He often used geometric forms and grid format compositions as well as hieroglyph-like symbols. Part of the permanent collection of the Fondation Beyeler.
Hoornuil by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1915).
A horned owl, every feather hand-cut into a block of wood. Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a beloved teacher in Amsterdam, famous for his black and white block printing. M. C. Escher, said Mesquita was the one who taught him how to look. Part of the permanent collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
