BURNED FOG
Burned Fog gathers works that share a single atmosphere where ochre, moss and tarnished gold burn slow. The warm palette of a world caught between day and night.
Sub clara nuda lucerna (Nude in the Clear Lamplight), Victor Hugo (1861).
Victor Hugo was a brilliant writer and a prolific painter, with a characteristic use of brown ink washes and deep smoky shadows. The title is from Horace (Satires, I.2) and carries an erotic charge in the original, which matches the nude silhouette that can be perceived in this nineteenth-century romantic abstraction. Part of the permanent collection of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris.
Sprenkelpapier, Anonymous (c. 1760).
Sprenkelpapier — speckled paper — was a craft tradition that Dutch bookbinders turned into something unexpectedly beautiful. This anonymous sheet burns with gold and dark green, organic and precise at once, a pattern almost tipping into landscape. Part of the permanent collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
The Home of the Heron, George Inness (1893).
In this grove of trees at dusk, the light is almost gone — just a warm glow caught between dark trunks, the world settling into itself for the night. Part of the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, USA.
