Victor Hugo was a brilliant writer and a prolific painter, with a characteristic use of brown ink washes and deep smoky shadows. The title is from Horace (Satires, I.2) and carries an erotic charge in the original, which matches the nude silhouette that can be perceived in this nineteenth-century romantic abstraction. Sprenkelpapier — speckled paper — was a craft tradition that Dutch bookbinders turned into something unexpectedly beautiful.
