Steenbergen fell from a table as an infant, leaving him disabled for life and requiring him to use crutches or a wheelchair. He spent a lifetime rendering the small and overlooked: insects, shells, petals. Part of the permanent collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

Mountains at the edge of the known world, rendered in the pale ochres and silvers of a landscape that had barely been named. Cooper painted New Zealand at a moment when European eyes were still looking elsewhere. Preserved within historical geographical archival collections.
