THE GREAT DEEP
No need to imagine. The ocean already has creatures more extraordinary than any invented, and waves no one has ever stopped. Fish, coral and a great wave to illustrate the underwater world we rarely get to visit. The Great Deep, brought to the surface.
The Great Wave off Kanagawa, Katsushika Hokusai (c. 1831).
A classic from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, displaying the power of the ocean waves. Impressions are held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
Icones rerum naturalium Pl. 50 by Peder Ascanius (1805–1806).
A coral portrait by Ascanius, a Norwegian naturalist who travelled and studied the cold seas of the north. A complete copy is held at the Ernst Mayr Library, Harvard University.
The Beautiful Sparus (1794) and Bifasciated Labrus(1800), George Shaw.
"The Beautiful Sparus" and "The Bifasciated Labrus" were drawn for one of the most ambitious natural history projects of the late 18th century. George Shaw and his engraver Frederick Polydore Nodder catalogued the animal kingdom species by species, and each one was painted with the attention usually given to portraits. Copies from The Naturalist's Miscellany (1789–1813) are held at the Natural History Museum, London.
